Why is Django not as popular as Ruby on Rails?

All of the frameworks are/were generally inspired by Rails. The simplicity of Ruby made it look like its easy. Simplicity of Ruby, awesomeness of Rails made it so anyone could jump in. so it doesn’t matter how many geeks your community have, it matters how many tutorials/Plugins your framework have. It may be possible that Mootools is far better than JQuery, but it failed to attract people to make more plugins for it. Django is geek framework, while Rails is Designers one. Django not as popular as Ruby

1. Unlike other languages, Ruby and Rails together have a built-in environment to get started. The Ruby principles such as DRY i.e. Don’t Repeat Yourself, Convention Over Configuration, web Development that doesn’t hurt, are nothing but its features, explained in a poetic manner.

2.  Ruby has always been a second language and has been opted by developers after swabbing their hands completely on one or two languages and frameworks. Coding has been the most traumatic part of development, and Ruby on Rails has arrived as a cure to this. Though initially ruby can be a challenging language to learn for it completely is different from other conventional languages and frameworks, but it can save you from hectic unusual coding once you get your hands onto it completely.

3.  It is more about the marketing and availability. Before the last few years Python has been a daunting task top setup, especially with virtual hosting. This would also be a good example of what PHP is highly used.

4.   Rails had its public release a year or two earlier than Django; provided a jumpstart for AJAX development, which was still the new hotness.  It was more fun than Java and ASP.Net, and provided more help than PHP in, if not doing things the right way, then at-least guiding novices away from doing things the wrong way.

5.   Has Django been released sooner, it might be closer to achieving the popularity Rails has now. At release, it too was easy to get started with, and provided its own variety of instant gratification followed by opportunities for incremental improvement. The documentation was, and still is, exemplary.

When Django was released, there were a lot of competing python frameworks. People in the community were concerned that python lacked a clear front runner for a web development framework.
